Arborvitae

Basic Information

Known as the “tree of life,” Arborvitae is majestic in size and abundant in unique benefits. Our arborvitae essential oil is sourced from the heartwood of the Thuja plicata tree. It is also known as Western Red Cedar and is native to North America (primarily Canada and the Northwestern United States).

This unique source of arborvitae essential oil contains a distinct chemical profile and is uniquely concentrated in methyl thujate. Native to Canada, all parts of the Arborvitae tree were used extensively by Native Americans for health benefits and for building vessels, totem poles, baskets, and clothing. Because of its natural preserving properties, Arborvitae prevents wood from rotting, which makes it popular in woodcraft and for preserving natural wood surfaces.

Introduction

  • Plant Part:Wood
  • Collection Method:Steam Distillation
  • Aromatic Description:Woody, warm, earthy
  • Main Constituents: Methyl thujate, methyl myrtenate, α-terpineol, ß-terpineol

Usage

  • Use aromatically
  • Use topically
  • Use Neat
  • Aromatic : Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.

  • Topical: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with carrier oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Main Function

  • Soothing skin, protecting against UV damage, anti-acne and anti-infection.
  • Protects against environmental and seasonal threats
  • Kill body louse. Powerful cleansing and purifying agent
  • Natural insect repellent and wood preservative
  • Regulates transcription in Staphylococcus aureus. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for many hospital-acquired infections

Application

  • Apply 1–2 drops to areas of concern on the skin.
  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and spray on surfaces or hands for a quick DIY cleaner.
  • Apply to wrists and ankles while hiking to repel insects.
  • Mix 4 drops of Arborvitae essential oil and 2 drops of Lemon essential oil for a natural wood preservative and polish.

  • Arborvitae blends well with Birch, Cedarwood, Cassia, Eucalyptus, Fir, Geranium, Lavender, Orange, Sandalwood, Tangerine essential oils.

Cautions

If you are pregnant, consult your physician before using essential oils topically or aromatically.

Plant Science

Anti- Acne

In vitro research suggests that terpinen-4-ol (a relatively small component of Arborvitae essential oil) may be effective against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, both thought to a contribute acne. (1)

Anti-Inflammatory

In vitro research suggests that arborvitae essential oil inhibited numerous proteins involved in the inflammation and immune response pathway. RNA studies suggest that arborvitae essential oil significantly downregulated 121 of 200 of the most regulated genes in human fibroblasts. (2) These studies were conducted with the Doterra Arborvitae essential oil.

Anti-UV radiation damage

In vitro research shows that β-Thujaplicin (a component of Arborvitae essential oil) can against UVB-Induced MMP-1 and MMP-3 mRNA Expressions in Skin Fibroblasts(3)

Anti-Microbial

In vitro research shows that terpinen-4-ol (a relatively small component of Arborvitae essential oil) down regulates transcription in Staphylococcus aureus. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for many hospital-acquired infections. (4)

Anti-Virus

In vitro research suggests that β-Thujaplicinol (a component of Arborvitae essential oil) inhibits hepatitis B virus replication by blocking the viral ribonuclease H activity(5)
